The Fat of the Land is the third studio album by The Prodigy. The album was released by XL Recordings on 30 June 1997 and on 1 July 1997 in the United States by Maverick Records. The album title comes from the old English phrase 'living off the fat of the land', which means living well or being wealthy.
The Fat of the Land has received critical acclaim. The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album has since gone double platinum, selling over 2 million copies in the U.S. In 1999, the album entered the Guinness World Records as the fastest-selling UK album and was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The album was also nominated for the 1997 Mercury Music Prize. This is without any doubt one of the best sounding vinyl releases I have heard in my life. The sound is just PERFECT on this release. This sounds so much better than the CD.
The Music for the Jilted Generation vinyl release sounds great, too, but this album is 22 minutes shorter than Music for the Jilted Generation so there is much more space for each song on each side and you can really hear it!!! If anyone thinks CD is better than vinyl then he must listen to this release!!! You can get this release almost anywhere and it is so easy to find. I love electronic music and this album has not lost any of its freshness ever since it was released twenty years ago. A year that put techno music on the map and solidified it as 'a thing' for years to come.
This album is absolutely everything you'd want AND more from a punk influenced hardcore techno album that pulls no punches. This album is 20 years old now but it FAR surpasses what's passed off as Techno these days. Smack My Bitch Up just pumps you up with adrenaline and is good for working out or a party. Climbatize is the most experimental, trippy, wierd sounding song I've ever heard the Prodigy release but it's one of my favorite tracks on this album for that very reason.

And of course, Firestarter, which is the standout track that perhaps made this album the most famous. Breathe and Narayan are also standout tracks on this one.
The sad thing about this album is that it marked the downfall of the Prodigy music wise after the 90's came to an end. Their 2004 effort was mediocre at best and had nowhere near the punch that Jilted Generation and this release did.
They really fell off track after this record. Needless to say, if you consider yourself a fan of electronic music or Hardcore Techno and DON'T have this record in your collection, then you aren't a true fan.

There is the rumour that the promo cassettes were never sent out. The 12' records which were pressed were sent out, but not the cassettes. One copy was given to Jon Carter (the man behind Monkey Mafia) and one copy to Liam. That means there are atleast 2 existing copies of that testpressing. Jon Carter was the first person outside of The Prodigy/XL Recordings to have it. Around that time (1996) XL Recordings moved their offices and the cassettes were (mistakenly) thrown in the garbage when they were cleaning up before moving. Some sources says that they were not destroyed by mistake, this was done on purpose.
There are some russian fake copies on ebay but you can easily spot that they are fake. They have used this very same scanned (from Record Collector magazine) front sleeve in their re-prints.

Not for sale. The CDR itself is a gold CDR and it has a printed sticker label on it, the text is not printed directly on the disc. This most likely a release intended for radio play and nothing else since the edits match regular radio edits. If it's Liam or an editer at Maverick who has made the edits is still unclear.
